Woman killed 70-year-old victim, sexually assaulted her with umbrella: cops

A New Jersey woman was busted in the sickening murder of a 70-year-old woman — who was sexually assaulted with an umbrella and robbed of a mere $15, according to prosecutors and a new report.

Caroline Beckert, 40, of Old Bridge, was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the horrifying attack on Joann Cullinan inside her home in the Glenwood Apartments, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement Thursday.

Cullinan was found dead Wednesday after Beckert called the cops confessing that she had killed someone — prompting police to swarm the apartment complex around 9:30 p.m., according to an affidavit from county Detective Erik Larsen, obtained by NJ.com.

It’s unclear exactly when Cullinan was murdered.

Beckert allegedly used a knife and a hard object — a drawer — to kill her elderly victim. She also molested Cullinan and stole the small amount of cash, the affidavit said.

The knife, as well as a bloody umbrella and clothing, have been recovered, according to the affidavit.

The two women were “acquaintances,” according to the affidavit.

Beckert is being held at the Middlesex County Jail and will appear Friday at New Brunswick Superior Court.

An autopsy will officially determine Cullinan’s cause of death.
