Kolhapur: A 40-year-old man has confessed to causing the death of his wife by first pushing her off a staircase and then smashing her head, all because she seemed happy to him despite his mother’s death. Sandeep works as a driver and his parents were retired teachers. His wife was a housewife.
Sandeep Madhukar Lokhande of Radhanagari Road lives with his 70-year-old retired father and a 16-year-old son, apart from the recently deceased mother Malati who died of cancer and the 39-year-old wife Shubhangi Lokhande who he admits to killing after his mother’s death.
The Rajwada Police station in Kolhapur told Maharashtra Times that Sandeep confessed that he was very upset with his wife looking happy and relieved after his mother’s death last week. He followed the wife to a staircase landing inside the three-storeyed house and pushed her down the flight of stairs. When she landed at the bottom of the stairs and begged for pardon to her life, he reportedly admitted to having smashed her head with a block of flooring marble.
Initially, Shubhangi’s death was termed suicide by Sandeep. He claimed that the loss of her mother-in-law’s life shocked Shubhangi into committing suicide. Police also retrieved the piece of stone he used to smash her head. Sandeep finally broke down after police grilled him. He confessed to having reacted in an uncontrolled rage after Shubhangi told him after his mother’s death to gather himself as life goes on.
