One young football fan got a stadium tour to remember as Roma centre back Chris Smalling made a surprise appearance.  

The on-loan Manchester United defender received a tweet from Matt Robertshaw that he and his son would be travelling to Rome and that he should keep an eye out for them after the game in the stands. 

But Smalling went one further as he gatecrashed a family photo on the Stadio Olimpico pitch as the father and son went on a tour of Roma’s Stadio Olimpico.

The Roma centre back came to surprise the fan and his family during their visit to the capital

Smalling, wearing a black suit, walks out of the tunnel and to the back of the family photo before the son and dad are left awestruck when the realise the defender was alongside them. 

The young fan is left completely stunned and is seen with his mouth wide open in disbelief that one of his favourite players has surprised him. 

After the initial shock wears off for his dad and close friends, the group, including Smalling, share a conversation on the pitch before the defender has one final surprise.

Smalling gives him a shirt and writes a personal message on the back as a unique memento 

Prior to their trip, dad Matt Robertshaw tweeted Roma and Chris Smalling about their visit

He presents a Roma shirt for the young fan and holds it out to add his autograph alongside the number on the back.  

The surprise was uploaded to Roma’s English twitter account under the title, ‘Football is brilliant’ and it quickly won the hearts of supporters who praised Smalling for his generosity. 

In response to the video, Robertshaw tweeted: Thank you @ChrisSmalling @ASRomaEN for the most surreal, amazing experience we will all never forget. You were all amazing and have made my sons Christmas present the best ever. Thank you.’ 

One supporter wrote: ‘Big thanks to @ASRomaEN and @ChrisSmalling for this incredible heart warming gesture.’

Smalling has thrived since leaving United on loan in the summer and he has fast become one of Roma’s most important players.

Reports have surfaced in Italy that Roma are keen to make the loan deal permanent given his impressive performances under boss Paulo Fonseca. 

But Sportsmail understands that despite repeated claims of a permanent deal being close to agreement, the clubs have not entered negotiations and Smalling is happy to wait until the summer. 

The 30-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until 2022 and has an extra year option.
