DeKalb County man charged with sexually abusing underage family member

A DeKalb County man was arrested Thursday on sexual abuse of a child charges after a family member came forward after attending a sexual abuse presentation at their middle school, authorities said Friday.

Russell Banks, 31, of Crossville, was charged with sexual abuse of a child less than 12, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office began investigation the allegations after it was contacted by Crossville Middle School officials about a student who reported inappropriate touching by a family member.

The middle school was given a presentation on how to prevent sexual abuse by Family Services of North Alabama.

The student then reported the allegations.

Banks is being held in the DeKalb County Detention Center.

His bail has yet to be set.

“This is a great job by our investigative team in quickly resolving this case.

Our utmost priority will always be protecting the children of our county,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden. “I’d also like to thank Family Services of North Alabama for doing what they do.

Having organizations like them active in our schools is a great resource for our investigators and crucial for protecting our children. If it wasn’t for educating our young people, some might not realize that this behavior is not OK.

This gives us the opportunity to stop it before it turns in to something worse.”
